David Stewart, “Under the Bridge”

March 5th, 2009

pic1These are a selection of photos from a work in progress I call “Under the Bridge.”  I undertook this project to bring into view the “invisible people” in Chicago whom we so often pretend not to see as they stand at highway off-ramps, holding a cup and a cardboard sign — “Homeless. Need Food. Need Help. God Bless.” I got to know a group of people who live under a bridge, and they allowed me to make photos of their daily lives.  The images are intimate, at times painfully intimate, portraits of their humanity.  These particular images are of Chrissy.  She is a prostitute, a heroin addict, a crack addict, and a teller heartbreaking life stories.
